Why Experimental Ecology Matters to Conservation Biology

Mark Bertness, Robert P. Brown Professor of Biology, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Brown University

Mark Bertness is the Robert P. Brown Professor of Biology emeritus in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Brown University in Providence Rhode Island. Growing up in Tacoma Washington he developed an interest in shoreline natural history exploring Salish Sea beaches. After his doctoral research on tropical hermit crab ecology at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama he joined the faculty at Brown University where he has spent his entire career. His research focuses on understanding the processes that structure natural communities and applying this knowledge to informing coastal conservation.
